Another robot head

I've had this story-- or at least, the barebones of one-- bouncing around in my head for the past month or so. I started up a notebook to jot down all the various ideas I sketch concepts down whenever I get the chance. I'll scan some of those doodles in soon, but for now here's a drawing of a robot head I done did with a Wacom in Illustrator:

The look isn't all that much different than drawing with say, a Rapidograph and some India ink, but it has the advantage of being easily editable and scaleable on the fly, which is nice. I'm not entirely sold on its use yet, but it's growing on me.

Frankenstein

Hoo boy, haven't posted in a while... bogged down with craziness at work, and on the other end of the spectrum and awfully powerful malaise. Here's something I posted to ThoughtFaucet, for the topic "Frankenstein":

Meanwhile, I've got a short story brewing in my head that I haven't yet put down on paper. I really gotta do something about that.

Dragon

Here's the dragon I drew to inhabit the castle piece:

It turned out pretty good IMO, even if it could use a little more contrast. But I did try putting in some tighter blacks, and it just ended up looking cartoony. I prefer the more painterly look of this version.

I think what I'd like to do is draw the castle in Colors using the Sketchup one as a reference, then combine the dragon and castle in Photoshop.

Sketchup mashup WIP

Here's a model I threw together for a quick Thought Faucet pic:

I'll probably manipulate it further, or maybe just use it as reference. I'm working on a dragon in Colors! that I'll add as another element, and then I'm thinking I'll finalize the painting in Photoshop.

Ship build update

Here's an update to the ship, with a new body. It's almost done, just a couple more details to add here and there:

Ship test build

I've started developing a new ship, so far I've just got an engine nacelle. I've slapped it onto my previous fighter model just to get a sense of its placement, I think it looks pretty nifty:

As I become more comfortable with the Sketchup interface, I find myself "zoning out" as I build a model... the process is a lot like when I really get into a drawing, it's a nice feeling.

Sketchup antics

So I've been fiddling with Google Sketchup on and off, studying the tutorials on youtube and practicing with the various tools... Here's a fighter of some sort:

I'm searching for ways to integrate it with my illustration style. Ultimately I'd like to be able to work out vehicles and backgrounds for comic book panels with it. Getting there bit by bit...

Here's a building I put together for Thought Faucet, for the daily topic "Skyscraper":

Built it in Sketchup, exported it as a TIFF and played with it in Illustrator and Photoshop. Pretty quick process, all around.

When it's time to change, you've got to rearrange... o/~

I'm transitioning my former drawing journal over to Blogger. I think I prefer the way Blogger handles images and such. You can find my older stuff over at LiveJournal here. Usual disclaimers apply, any art on this blog is © 2008-2010 Ben Nunez, unless otherwise indicated.
